FAQs
What is Pumpkin Picking?
Pumpkin picking is a fun countryside activity where you head into the fields to choose and harvest your own pumpkin. It’s a great way to celebrate the autumn season and create lasting family memories.
How Can You Tell When Pumpkins Are Ready?
Pumpkins are ready to pick when their skin is hard, their colour is deep and even, and the stem has started to dry out. If you can’t pierce the skin with your fingernail, it’s good to go!
How Long Do Pumpkins Last Once Picked?
If stored properly, pumpkins can last between 2–3 months. Keep them in a cool, dry place to enjoy them right through autumn.
How to Pick & Store a Good Pumpkin
- How to pick a good pumpkin: Choose one with firm skin, no soft spots, and a sturdy stem.
- How to store pumpkins once picked: Wipe them down, keep them in a dry, cool spot, and avoid stacking to prevent bruising.
- Do pumpkins change colour after being picked? Once picked, they will not ripen further, so choose one that already looks the way you want.
Can You Take Dogs Pumpkin Picking?
We love animals at Hatton, but for the safety and comfort of all visitors, dogs are not allowed in the Adventure World or the pumpkin fields (except assistance dogs please email hatton@hattonworld.com to arrange this).
What To Wear Pumpkin Picking?
The fields can be muddy in autumn, so we recommend wellies or sturdy boots, along with warm, weather-appropriate clothing. Don’t forget a bag to carry your pumpkins!
Can You Eat Pumpkin Straight After Picking?
Yes! Pumpkins are ready to eat as soon as they’re picked. Just wash, cut, and cook them – perfect for soups, pies, or roasting.
Should I Pick Pumpkins Before Frost?
Yes. Frost can damage pumpkins, so they’re always harvested before the first frost of the season to keep them in the best condition.
When is the Best Time for Pumpkin Picking?
The best time to visit is early to mid-October for the widest choice of pumpkins. Later in the month, it’s perfect if you’re looking to carve pumpkins ready for Halloween.
